You may well find that your new labrador likes to chew his lead when you’re out on a walk. This is something that Archie did a lot at first, much to my frustration. A friend told me that you can buy a little metal lead extension. The idea being that your dog can’t bite through the metal.

Another tip received was to rub some mustard seed or lemon juice along the lead …the idea being that it tastes horrible so the dog doesn’t chew the lead. I didn’t fancy (or have anyways) the mustard seed but I did try rubbing half a lemon along the lead. Did it work? Nah, not really !

We’ve progressed after some effort to saying Archie, drop the lead and somewhat miraculously he does Actually, nowadays he sometimes holds the lead in his mouth and that stops him picking up just about anything he comes into sight line with on the ground.

So we’re out on our morning walk and heading for home along the prom. I let Archie off the lead inside some public gardens and after a minute or two he spots something.

It was a black nappy sack blowing around in the wind on the grass. At first he sniffed it and I thought that was that. But then he picks it up. I tell him “No” but of course he takes no notice and before I can get to him he’s ate the bag!

Hopefully, it’ll just be processed and cause him no problems. He scoffed a discarded wet wipe the other morning and that came through so fingers crossed.

Why do labradors eat just about anything they can?

He knew exactly what he’d done and after I’d rescued the tea towel Archie gave me that guilty look !

But apparently, researchers have found that dogs give that look when being told off, even if they are entirely innocent. Researchers found no evidence to suggest that dogs know when they’ve been naughty – they simply give that guilty look just because they are getting told off.

Do you agree?

Before we got Archie we knew that you shouldn’t walk a labrador puppy too much because it can cause joint problems in later life.

As previously mentioned Archie’s first walk was a short affair. Now Archie is four months old and we’re still applying the 5 mins per month rule of thumb. The guideline is walk your labrador puppy for a total lof 5 minutes per month in age, no more than twice a day. So at the moment gets around a 20 minute walk in the morning and a slightly shorter one in the afternoon. It’s not an exact timing and sometimes he might be out a little longer, sometimes a little less if he’s been active in the park.

I think this 5mins/month guideline can be used until the dog is fully grown at around 18 months – when you give your labrador as much exercise as it wants.

One good thing about walking Archie – he always comes home and has a good sleep

I took Archie for a walk earlier and we went around a few side roads for a change. We were walking up one road when I noticed two cats, one sitting on the pavement and one nearby on the road. Archie didn’t spot them until we got closer.

When he did notice them he stopped in his tracks. The fur on his back stood up as he looked at the cats. He was evidently a little bit scared of the moggies and needed a bit of a pull on his lead to continue. As we got closer the cats disappeared …Archie looked up at me for reassurance, so I gave a him a pat

I wonder when he’ll realise that most times it’s the cat that’ll be scared?

So, with his vaccinations complete and collar and lead on it was time to take Archie out for his first walk!

I’d put the collar on him the other day and whilst it was a bit of a faff actually putting it on, Archie didn’t seem to mind it. He gave it the odd scratch with his back leg but that was about it. For a couple of trial runs we went walkies up and down the drive with his lead on. Attaching the lead to the collar was more difficult than anticipated because he thought I was playing and he wouldn’t keep still.

Did he chew the lead? Oh yes! Archie loves chewing his nylon lead and if he gets a bit excited he manages to get it wrapped round his legs. Someone gave us the tip of rubbing some lemon juice or mustard powder on the lead to stop him chewing it. But we’re yet to try that one out.

So, off we went up the drive an out onto the pavement. Archie didn’t seem too keen on leaving home and he pulled on the lead to try and get back home. After a little coaxing he was fine and off we all trotted. Archie was a bit here and there to begin with and he had a good sniff at garden walls, pavement and lampposts.

As puppies shouldn’t walk far at all when young, we only went around the block which is a 10 minute walk tops. I think it’s bad for their joints in future years if you exercise them too hard when they’re young.

It was great to see him walking along with his new family… walking with his nose pointed out taking in the all the new smells. Wait until he gets the chance to smell the sea!

Back home and in the back garden the lead came off and Archie was given a well deserved little treat.
