Archie Gets His First Walk

1

So, with his vaccinations complete and collar and lead on it was time to take Archie out for his first walk!

I’d put the collar on him the other day and whilst it was a bit of a faff actually putting it on, Archie didn’t seem to mind it. He gave it the odd scratch with his back leg but that was about it. For a couple of trial runs we went walkies up and down the drive with his lead on. Attaching the lead to the collar was more difficult than anticipated because he thought I was playing and he wouldn’t keep still.

Did he chew the lead? Oh yes! Archie loves chewing his nylon lead and if he gets a bit excited he manages to get it wrapped round his legs. Someone gave us the tip of rubbing some lemon juice or mustard powder on the lead to stop him chewing it. But we’re yet to try that one out.

So, off we went up the drive an out onto the pavement. Archie didn’t seem too keen on leaving home and he pulled on the lead to try and get back home. After a little coaxing he was fine and off we all trotted. Archie was a bit here and there to begin with and he had a good sniff at garden walls, pavement and lampposts.

As puppies shouldn’t walk far at all when young, we only went around the block which is a 10 minute walk tops. I think it’s bad for their joints in future years if you exercise them too hard when they’re young.

It was great to see him walking along with his new family… walking with his nose pointed out taking in the all the new smells. Wait until he gets the chance to smell the sea!

Back home and in the back garden the lead came off and Archie was given a well deserved little treat.
